To boost new vehicle sales & stimulate the economy, the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act of 2009 states that if you buy a new vehicle this year, you may be able to deduct the sales tax on your 2009 federal income tax return. Here are a few details:

• Applies to new vehicle purchases only (not leases)
• Purchase must be made between February 17 - December 31, 2009
• Income limits: $125,000 single & $250,000 joint filers
• Deduction is limited to state & local sales & excise taxes on vehicle & applies to the first $49,500 of the purchase price
• Qualifying cars, light trucks & SUVs must weigh 8,500 lbs or less
• Both itemizers and non-itemizers qualify
